Transforming the Streetscape

Streetfilms has an incredible interview/walking tour with NYC's transportation commissioner about what they've done with their streets.

Sam, hurry up! We're falling behind.

I was just in New York. I was stunned by what they'd done on Broadway. Subtracting two lanes to create a bike lane and a pedestrian boulevard, particularly given the incredible traffic volume in midtown -- in how many other cities would this even be possible?

Wells Says:

Totally great Streetscape video and interview with NYC 'complete street' planner. I've always said what stands out most about Portland is not its bicycling, not its MAX and Streetcar lines, but rather its pedestrian amenities. Of course, the 'complete street' concept incorporates all modes of travel - safe and convenient pedestrian access and bicycling, good transit, cars/trucks - but the mode with the most immediately felt influence is pedestrian amenities.
